A Brookhaven man died after being struck by a vehicle on Hwy. 49 early Saturday morning in Forrest County.
Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem identified the victim as 21-year-old Jacob Smith, of Brookhaven.
First responders were dispatched from the Rawls Springs Fire Department around 3:17 a.m. Saturday to a passenger car-pedestrian collision on U.S. Hwy. 49 north near the intersection of Hwy. 49 and Hwy. 42.
RSFD Engine One arrived to find a pedestrian in the median and a passenger car with moderate damage parked on the road’s shoulder. After examination, it was determined that the pedestrian had been struck by the vehicle and had received fatal injuries.
The northbound lanes were shut down until the Mississippi Highway Patrol arrived and secured the scene for investigation. The driver declined treatment or transport to a hospital. It was unclear if the driver had been charged in the incident.
MHP, RSFD, AAA Ambulance, Forrest County Sheriff’s Office, and the Forrest County Coroner’s Office all responded to the scene.
