Several Mississippi Department of Transportation projects in Lincoln, Franklin, Lawrence, and other Southwest Mississippi counties are progressing. MDOT Southern Transportation District Commissioner Charles Busby announced updates for projects in 11 counties Monday.
“As I begin my term as Southern District Transportation Commissioner, I’m excited to see the new year start off strong with many large projects getting underway in the southwest region of the state,” said Busby. “Several bridge projects recently set in motion will have a positive impact on motorists, marine traffic and our state’s economy for decades to come. I’m pleased to see funds from the Legislature and federal government at work to enhance infrastructure safety for the traveling public.”
Lincoln County
A project in Lincoln County is underway to mill and overlay the paved shoulders, local roads and crossovers of approximately five miles of U.S. Hwy. 84, from the U.S. Hwy. 51 intersection east to the intersection of East Monticello Street. Paving is underway on the shoulders. Once asphalt work is completed, new permanent striping will be placed.
The $2.9 million project was awarded to Dickerson and Bowen Inc., in Brookhaven, and is expected to be completed in spring 2024.
Lawrence County
In Lawrence County, an overlay project is complete except for final striping, to be placed when weather conditions allow. The $3 million project — on State Route 43 from County Road 43A to S.R. 184 — was awarded to Dickerson and Bowen, and is expected to be completed by spring 2024.
Franklin County
A bridge-replacement project in Franklin County began in November on Hwy. 98 over the Homochitto River. An aging truss bridge is being replaced with a modern post-tension concrete bridge. Hwy. 98 is closed from S.R. 556 to Berrytown Road until construction is completed.
Crews are pouring trial shafts and constructing the work bridge platform. The project’s scope also includes the construction of new drainage structures on each side of the bridge, as well as approximately 2,500 feet of new roadway.
The $25.7 million contract was awarded to Key LLC of Madison, and is expected to be completed in the summer of 2026.
Amite County
Work will begin soon on a project to widen and overlay approximately 10 miles of S.R. 569 from S.R. 24 to Coleman Road. The project, awarded to Dickerson and Bowen, should wrap up in fall 2024.
Pike and Walthall counties
Work is underway on a mill and overlay project on approximately seven miles of U.S. Hwy. 98 from Bogue Chitto River to Industrial Park Road in Pike and Walthall counties. The $6 million project was awarded to Dickerson and Bowen, and is expected to be completed in fall 2024.
An overlay project on five miles of Hwy. 98 from Industrial Park Road to Old Hwy. 98 East in Walthall County is now complete. The $5.2 million project was also awarded to Dickerson and Bowen.
Jefferson Davis County
Mainline paving is complete on a project to overlay Hwy. 84 from the Lawrence County line to the Covington County line. Next, paving will take place on local roads and shoulder gravel will be placed. The $12.5 million project was awarded to APAC-Mississippi Inc. and is scheduled to be complete in summer 2024.
More projects
Work has begun on a project to replace two bridges over the Pearl River on Hwy. 98 in Marion County. Three bridges will be replaced on S.R. 149 in Simpson County — Sellers Creek (Bridge No. 128.6), Dabbs Creek (Bridge No. 131.7) and Dabbs Creek Relief Bridge are closed for the project. These projects were awarded to T.L. Wallace of Columbia, and are $57.7 million and $25 million, respectively.
A $17.2 million overlay project on Hwy. 49 will upgrade 10 miles from Magee to Mendenhall, and make intersection improvements from Goodwater Road to First Avenue. All major work is complete, and final striping will be placed when weather conditions allow.
A $10 million mill and overlay project on 10 miles of Hwy. 49 from Mount Olive to Magee is set to begin in the spring. All lanes will be milled and overlayed, with paved shoulders receiving a fog seal treatment. Both projects were awarded to APAC-Mississippi.
A project to widen and overlay approximately eight miles of S.R. 43 in Simpson County is underway, from S.R. 28 to S.R. 13. Mainline paving is complete and shoulder material is being placed. The $2.6 million project was awarded to AJ Construction of Pearl and is expected to be completed in spring 2024.
A slide repair project on Hwy. 51 in Wilkinson County is now complete, approximately one-third mile north of the Cold Springs Road and Hwy. 61 intersection. The $1.3 million project was awarded to Midway Construction of Roxie.
