BROOKHAVEN — National Weather Service in Jackson warns flash flooding could strike again this weekend. One to two inches of rain could fall in a short period of time causing localized flash flooding in low lying areas and minor river flooding could continue after the already saturated soils from last week’s flooding.

Lincoln County can expect a sunny and 70 degree Friday going into the weekend. Better enjoy the pretty weather while it lasts. NWS Jackson forecasts a 40 percent chance of rainfall after 3 p.m. Saturday and 100 percent chance of rain Saturday night. Thunderstorms could be possible after midnight.

Sunday has a 60 percent chance of rain while Monday has a 20 percent chance of rain. At this time, no rain is in the forecast for Tuesday or Wednesday.

Southwest Mississippi got around 7.72 inches of rain in January which is 2.63 inches of rain above the average. The majority of the rainfall came from January 23 to January 27. The 4.04 inches of rain recorded on January 24 is the fourth wettest day recorded in January according to NWS Jackson.

The rainfall in January was enough to move most of Lincoln County out of a drought and into abnormally dry. Caseyville and the surronding areas of the county’s “panhandle,” are considered to still be in a moderate drought according to the National Drought Mitigation Center in Lincoln, Nebraska.
