BROOKHAVEN — Mississippi Highway Patrol reported a safer Christmas travel period than 2022. Only one fatality occurred during the Christmas Holiday period in Covington County Saturday. 

MHP issued 2,544 citations, worked 144 crashes and made 78 arrests for DUIs. Of the 144 crashes, 31 injuries were sustained and one person was killed. 2022, had 5,294 citations, 80 DUIs, 160 crashes and seven fatal wrecks over a four day Holiday enforcement period. 

Lincoln County saw four wrecks over the Holiday weekend. 

December 24

• Single vehicle wreck Sunday morning at Lincoln County on I-55 Northbound at mile marker 46 with no injuries. 

December 25

• Single vehicle wreck Monday morning on I-55 southbound at mile marker 46, no injuries. 
• Single vehicle wreck Monday night, I-55 southbound at mile marker 28 with injuries. 

December 26

• Single vehicle wreck Tuesday afternoon, I-55 northbound north of exit 30. No injuries
