BROOKHAVEN — Three friends sat in the shade of a magnolia tree as the cool breeze blew Thursday afternoon. Shannon Miller exclaimed that “Only in Brookhaven,” could two of those friends have lived in the same house on Brady Drive at different points in time close to where The Dart landed Thursday afternoon.
Miller is the director of development at Brookhaven Academy and owns her own marketing company called Shannon Miller Marketing. She graduated from Ole Miss with a degree in Broadcast Journalism and Public Relations.
Although she has lived in Brookhaven for 16 years, Miller is a native of Weir in Choctaw County. She actually attended Weir Attendance Center before the school districts consolidated to Choctaw County High School in Ackerman.
“I grew up in Weir and life brought me to Brookhaven. I have worked in marketing and public relations. I have done some radio work and radio marketing as well,” Miller said.
One of her friends chimed in that Miller once had a radio show. She is now working at Brookhaven Academy where her oldest son Parker and youngest son Reed go to school. Her middle son Eli goes to Brookhaven High School.
“BA is a great environment and a great place to work with great students,” Miller said. “I love my job but I’m also proud of my three sons. This is their home and it is a great community. I love Brookhaven because it is a perfect place to raise a family.”
Her son Parker is in his fourth year of doing broadcast work for the Brookhaven Academy livestream and he is working at B92.1 doing color commentary for BA football games. Each week, Parker records a segment called “Parkers Picks,” where he chooses the winners of key high school and college matchups.
As a junior, he has continued to pursue the interest of broadcasting but handles other responsibilities like announcing the starting lineup, praying, welcoming fans to the game and running the scoreboard and livestream for BA Softball games. Shannon said Parker loves broadcasting and wants to go to Ole Miss.
Eli is named after Eli Manning but ironically is an LSU fan. He is the “rebel,” of the family and roots for Louisiana State University. Shannon said the rest of the family are avid Ole Miss fans and look forward to the opening game of the 2023 season.
He too loves sports and is a manager for the Brookhaven football team. Shannon said she found herself at Brookhaven High School’s football game for Eli last week while listening to Parker call Brookhaven Academy’s game on the radio.
“Eli loves the Panthers but he has his own thing too. He used to have all of these auctions in the front yard but now he has an antique booth at Midtown Mall and Vendors Emporium,” Shannon said. “He loves flea markets and yard sales.”
Reed is very involved in athletics. He plays baseball, basketball, football and soccer. Shannon said her youngest son takes lessons for tennis and golf as well.
“He is a straight A student and is involved in everything it seems,” she said.
With three boys she is able to find free time. They usually spend their free time going to sporting events, visiting the beach, and going to zoos.
“I love going to sporting events with them and supporting these boys,” Shannon said.
