BROOKHAVEN — Registration is now open for Master Gardeners through the Mississippi State University Extension Service. Lincoln County Extension agent Tristan Peavey said the deadline for registration is Sept. 11, 2023. 

People can register for Master Gardeners 

on the MSU Extension Service website or in person at the Lincoln County MSU Extension Office at the Lincoln County Courthouse. People enrolled in the Master Gardeners program must complete a self paced online course from October 3 to December 4 to be eligible. 

The program exchanges 40 hours of training for individuals to give 40 hours of volunteer service. Master Gardeners do projects in Brookhaven by working on landscaping, they also partner with the local school districts to promote horticulture in youth. One program they hold each year is the watermelon growing contest. 

“Master Gardeners are very active in the community. It is a great way for those interested in horticulture to be around other like minded people and volunteer,” Peavey said. “You don’t have to be an expert to do this. You will learn a lot from people who have different forms of expertise.” 

Master Gardeners will learn about vegetable gardens, ornamental gardening and even urban forestry. Besides community service, the program allows people who share a similar passion to work together. 

“It is just a great way to hang out with people who love plants,” Peavey said. 

Anyone who has questions about the Master Gardener program can call the local extension office at 601-835-3460. After the first year, Master Gardeners have to complete 20 hours of service and 12 hours of education to remain certified.
