BROOKHAVEN — It seems the prayer of many farmers, cattlemen and gardeners have been answered with rain over the weekend and more forecast to come. The National Weather Service in Jackson forecasts cooler temperatures today with the high reaching just 90 degrees which is 10 to 15 degrees cooler than the previous week.

Tuesday has a 60 percent chance of rain with the precipitation amounts forecast to be between .1 to .25 inches. More is expected in any local thunderstorms. The greatest chance of rain is between 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday evening is forecast to have a 30 percent chance of rain. A cool wind will blow out of the north to northeast at 5 mph.

Wednesday and Thursday are forecast to be sunny with highs of 92 and lows at 65 and 67 respectively. Looks like you could sleep with the window open instead of running air conditioning Wednesday and Thursday.

NWS Jackson warns there are still dangerous wildfire conditions for Southwest Mississippi. Burn bans are still in place for 42 counties in Mississippi including Lincoln County according to the Mississippi Forestry Commission. Lincoln County’s burn ban is in effect until further notice according to the MFC.

Opening day forecast

Friday through Sunday have between 30 to 50 percent chance of precipitation right now. You might need to wear frog togs for the season opener for Canada Geese on Friday and doves on Saturday. The high for Friday is 94 with a east to northeast wind around 5 mph. Saturday’s high is 90 with an east wind around 5 mph.

Legal shooting light for the Canada Geese opener is 6:07 a.m. with sunrise at 6:37 a.m. Friday morning. Saturday’s legal shooting light is 6:08 a.m. with sunrise at 6:38 a.m. Remember shotguns must be plugged while hunting migratory birds, the shotgun can only hold three shells including one in the chamber, and lead shot can not be used.
