BROOKHAVEN — Mississippi is burning up this week with temperatures reaching the upper 90s. Today is supposed to hit a high of 98 and a heat index of 110. A 20 percent chance of rain today could make things muggy and steamy as the day goes on.
Tonight’s temperatures will cool off to a nice and balmy 75 degrees. Saturday temps will hit 98 with a heat index of 110 and a low of 74. NWS Jackson warns the excessive heat poses an extreme risk and could cause heat stroke with prolonged outdoor activity.
June 29th’s low of 77 and high of 99 were a good six to eight degrees higher than the average temperature but still well shy of the record 105 degrees set in 1988.
June 30’s record high was 103 set in 1914. The forecasted 98 degrees is well below that record but is also seven degrees warmer than the average temperature. The lowest temp ever recorded on June 30 in Brookhaven was 54 degrees in 1923.
