Puckett eliminates West Lincoln in softball second round

The thrill of Monday gave way to the agony of Tuesday for West Lincoln softball.

A day after an exciting finish to game two on their home field, the Bears had their season ended by a 7-0 loss to Puckett in Rankin County on Tuesday.

Puckett took the 3-game, MHSAA 2A second round series by winning 8-5 on Friday and getting the shutout win on Tuesday. The victory for West Lincoln on Monday was the conclusion of a rain-delayed game that began on Saturday.

Puckett senior catcher Kinley Ainsworth hit a first inning, two-run home run to put the home team ahead. Ainsworth is a Copiah-Lincoln CC softball signee.

That hit was followed by a solo home run by Mallary Lemoine that put Puckett up 3-0.

Puckett pitcher Lila Murphy gave up just one hit and struck out one while walking no batters. West Lincoln senior Deanna Lofton was the lone player from the green and white to hit safely.

Puckett (26-5) moves on to face Choctaw County (19-9) in the third round.

West Lincoln (22-6) and coach Anita Thornton will graduate a senior class that includes Lofton, Cara Jarancik, Mailey Kate Young, Ramsey Hall and Southwest Mississippi CC softball signee Mary Claire Johnson.

West Lincoln started four seniors and five freshmen on Tuesday.
