Baseball roundup: Regular season wraps up for local schools

Here’s a look at how area baseball teams have fared in the final week of regular season play.

 

Brookhaven Academy

The Cougars (16-12) wrapped up the regular season on Thursday with an 8-2 road win at MHSAA member school West Marion.

It was the second win over the week for the Cougars of the MAIS to get a win over an MHSAA foe after they beat Lawrence County 6-1 on Monday.

Next up for BA is a MAIS 5A first round playoff matchup with Central Hinds Academy.

Trevor Fortenberry started the game on the mound and struck out five in three innings against West Marion.

Catcher Caleb Authement hit a solo home run for BA. Senior Easton Boyte led Brookhaven Academy with three hits in the win.

The Cougars led 3-2 until they exploded for five runs in the top of the seventh inning.

Judson Griffin pitched the win on Monday against Lawrence County. He struck out nine and walked one in five innings of three-hit ball.

Sam Stevens and Taylor Daughdrill each had a double for BA against LC. Daughdrill drove in two runs.

Brookhaven Academy went 9-3 in MAIS District 4-5A play to take first place in their district. They’ll play at Central Hinds Academy at 6 p.m. on Monday.

Game two will start at 4:30 p.m. on April 27 at BA. If a third game is needed, it will be played immediately following game two.

 

Brookhaven High School

The Panthers (17-8) finished up their 2023 regular season on Thursday with a 12-6 home loss to Wesson.

Next up for the Panthers is a MHSAA 5A first round pairing with Wayne County High School.

Brookhaven High led 2-0 after one inning on Thursday. Ben Adams, JP Wallace Jonah Smith all drove in a run apiece for the Panthers in the loss.

The schedule is for BHS to host Wayne County on April 24 at 6 p.m. and then travel to Waynesboro for game two on April 28. If a third and deciding game is needed, BHS will host it on April 29 at 2 p.m.

 

Bogue Chitto

The Bobcats (19-8) stepped out of region play on Thursday with a 14-7 home loss to the 4A North Pike Jaguars.

Next up for the Bobcats is a MHSAA 2A first round matchup with Pelahatchie High. Game one is scheduled to be played at Bogue Chitto at 7:15 p.m. on April 24. Game two will be played at Pelahatchie at 7 p.m. If a third and deciding game is needed, it’ll be hosted by BC on April 29 at 7:15 p.m.

The Bobcats actually outhit North Pike 11-9 but were done in by seven errors in the loss.

Colton Frith led BC with two RBIs an Easton Sartin provided the Bobcats with their lone extra base hit, a double.

Freshman Tripp McCaffrey got the start on Tuesday in a 5-4 win over Enterprise. He struck out four and gave up two hits in five innings. Frith and Myles Foil threw an inning each in relief.

Foil drove in two runs against EAC.

Enterprise

The Yellow Jackets (16-9) lost a close one to their Lincoln County rivals from Bogue Chitto on Tuesday by a 5-4 final score.

The Jackets got a double each from Prewitt Falvey and Nick Harris in the loss to the Bobcats. As a team, they outhit BC 8-4.

The first round opponent for Enterprise in the MHSAA 1A first round will be French Camp Academy.

EAC will host on April 24 at 7 p.m. for game one. Game two will be played at French Camp on April 28 at 6 p.m. If a third game is needed, it’ll be hosted by Enterprise on April 29 at 7 p.m.

 

Loyd Star

The Hornets (22-5) piled up the hits on Thursday to race past Franklin County by a 15-5 final score in their regular season finale. Loyd Star also beat FC 15-12 on Monday.

Connor Cunningham, Casen DeHart and Caden White hit a double each in the Thursday night win. Senior Garrett Carwyle also slugged a triple for the Hornets and junior Brandon Burt drove in a team high three runs in the win.

Loyd Star will play Velma Jackson in the first round of the MHSAA 2A playoffs. The teams will play two, with the opener starting at 5 p.m., on April 25 at Loyd Star.

 

West Lincoln

The Bears (8-14) went 1-2 on the week with a win over East Marion, a loss to East Marion and a 7-3 setback to Salem on Thursday.

Next up is a MHSAA 2A first round series against the Pisgah Dragons. West Lincoln will play at Pisgah on April 25 at 6 p.m. and then host game two on April 28 at 6 p.m.

Korben Altman, Taylor Myers and Carter Hall all drove in a run each for the Bears in the loss to Salem.

Wesson

The Cobras (13-10) got two nice wins last week with a 3-2 victory over North Pike and a 12-6 win at Brookhaven High.

Will Loy and Wyatt Garrett slugged a double each for the Cobras against BHS. Loy, a leadoff batter, drove in five runs while senior right fielder Grayson Coates had two hits that drove in three runs. Coates was the only Cobra to not strike out in the win.

Gabe Selman picked up the pitching win in relief of Loy.

On Tuesday against North Pike, Garrett struck out six, walked seven and didn’t give up an earned run in 6.2 innings of work on the mound.

Selman doubled against North Pike as the Cobras outhit the Jaguars 4-3 in the win.

Wesson will play Southeast Lauderdale in a three-game series that starts on April 25 with the Cobras hosting the Tigers at 7 p.m. SE Lauderdale will host game two on April 28 at 6 p.m. If a third game is needed, it’ll be played at Wesson on April 29 at 6 p.m.
