BROOKHAVEN — It took all seven innings for the Cougars to finish off the Bowling Green Bucaneers in Wednesday afternoon’s softball game but they took control from the start in an 8-0 win. Brookhaven Academy opened the scoring with six runs in the first inning and outhit Bowling Green 12-2 to clinch the district title on the final day.
BA’s Kensey Covington threw three innings allowing one hit and striking out two batters to earn the win. Maggie Rushing closed out the final four innings striking out two batters and allowing one hit. They threw a combined no-hitter in the team’s sixth game in five days and third game in three days.
Covington said her arm was a little sore after pitching this past week. She will have four days of rest along with Rushing to get ready for the South State tournament this weekend.
Bailey Parks, Annaston Poole, Morgan Chemin and Miriam Wallace had two hits in the game. Reagan Newman and Ainsley Jergins had two RBIs. Chermin scored the final run of the game on a solo-home run to centerfield.
When Rushing punched the final out the celebrations were calm. Head Coach Lisa Covington said “It was the quietest district title celebration,” she has seen as a coach. Her team believes the job is not over yet as they hope to win South State and advance to the State Tournament.
“I’m extremely proud of the girls,” she said. “They have worked hard since July 15.”
