Canadian National crews are working to repair the damage to broken tracks in downtown Brookhaven.
Broken rails and substructure caused a freight train to derail in downtown Brookhaven Tuesday morning around 8 a.m. A derailment is when the train’s wheels are not evenly and safely connected with the rails.
Portions of the track came apart in the crossing of Monticello Street, causing the train to have to stop until the damage could be fully assessed and properly addressed.
The railroad crossing at Minnesota Street is now open for traffic to pass in downtown Brookhaven. Traffic can also cross on overpasses on Hwy. 84, Dale Trail and Industrial Park Road.
All other crossings remain closed until further notice. It is likely the Monticello Street crossing will remain closed past today, to allow for further work.
