Here’s a look at how area MHSAA schools fared in girls’ basketball games played Monday in the first round of the various state tournaments.

MHSAA 5A State Tournament

Brookhaven High 61,

Hattiesburg High 45

Coach Preston Wilson and the Lady Panthers will head to Carriere on Friday and take on Pearl River Central in the second round of the MHSAA 5A State Tournament. PRC (12-11) had a first-round bye on Monday after winning the Region 7-5A Tournament with a 44-34 win over Long Beach last week.

Brookhaven High is now 21-5 after the home win Monday against Hattiesburg High. The winner between Ole Brook and Pearl River Central moves on to play the winner between Laurel High (16-9) and Gautier (17-10) in the third round.

Wilson’s team bounced back nicely after losing 37-33 to West Jones in the Region 5-5A championship game on Friday. Junior guard Angel “Cookie” Wilkinson scored 23 points in the win over Hattiesburg. Wilkinson pulled down six rebounds, handed out five assists and made three steals.

Senior Kyja Willis added 15 points for the Lady Panthers against HHS. Leah Wilcher scored six points and Makyia Stalling added five points. Raven Smith and Alexis Kelly scored four points each for the Lady Panthers while De’Naejah Williams and Aliyah Watkins scored two points each.

MHSAA 2A State Tournament

Loyd Star 47, Collins 19

Loyd Star put together a dominating performance in front of its home fans Monday in Hornetville. Coach Seth Britt’s team got 20 points from senior point guard Aubrey Britt in the win. The Lady Hornets move to 13-12 on the season with the win.

Loyd Star led 13-5 after the first quarter and 27-10 at halftime.

Junior Alyssa Leggett knocked down three 3-pointers for Loyd Star and scored 13 points in the win. Senior forward Madison Falvey added eight points while Baylee Zumbro, Natalie Womack and Riley Thornton scored two points apiece for LS. Loyd Star will travel to Lake High (20-3) on Friday for a second-round game. Lake beat Pisgah 64-30 in a first-round matchup on Monday.

West Lincoln 55,

Stringer 18

West Lincoln moves on to the second round of the playoffs where they await the winner of the Pelahatchie and Kemper County game. Coach Alissa Adams and the Lady Bears were led by junior guard Kara Beth Addison in the blowout win over Stringer Monday in Jack Case Gymnasium. Addison scored 22 points, handed out nine assists, grabbed seven rebounds and made five steals for WL.

Junior guard Mary Claire Johnson added 11 points, three rebounds and one assist and junior guard Ramsey Hall added 10 points, six steals and three assists for the Lady Bears. West Lincoln (17-8) will host a second-round game on Friday. The winner of that game moves on to face the winner between North Forrest and Velma Jackson in the third round.

Heidelberg 55,

Bogue Chitto 51

The 2021-2022 season came to an end with a close loss for Bogue Chitto and coach Marc Howard Monday in Jasper County. BC finishes with a 13-13 record in Howard’s first season as head coach after previously serving as an assistant at his alma mater.

The Lady Bobcats have plenty returning next season as they started just one senior in Kaitlin Poole. Ali Anne Long is the only other senior on the roster this season for BC.

MHSAA 3A State Tournament

West Marion 58,

Wesson 51 OT

Wesson coach Michelle Nunnery and her Lady Cobras (17-10) had their season come to an end via an overtime loss Monday at home against West Marion. It was the second meeting of the season for the teams as West Marion won 64-63 on Dec. 30.

The game was tied at 48-48 after regulation, but the visiting Lady Trojans from Foxworth owned the extra four-minute period. Raven Jones led WM with 18 points.

Sophomore point guard Me’Leyjah Lyons scored a game high 19 points for Wesson. Nunnery’s team had just three seniors in forward Kionna Gibson, center Breanna Grant-Hall and guard Sarya Smith. Gibson scored 11 points Monday while Grant-Hall added eight points and Smith chipped in two points.

Wesson led 48-44 with one-minute remaining in the game, but back-to-back turnovers gave West Marion a chance to tie the score with 23 seconds left in regulation.

Sophomore Jahnasia Harris scored six points for Wesson while sophomore Jayla Martin added five points. West Marion moves on to face Union in the second round.

MHSAA 4A State Tournament

Moss Point 54,

Lawrence County 29

Lawrence County and coach Candice McDuffey faced one of the best defensive teams in all of 4A girls’ basketball. Homestanding Moss Point held LC in single digits scoring each quarter in a first-round win.

Moss Point (20-10) played in the 4A state title game last season and the season before that. Monday, they jumped up 19-8 in the first quarter and led 34-12 at halftime. LC finishes with a 14-11 record in McDuffey’s first season as head coach at her alma-mater.

MHSAA 1A State Tournament

Taylorsville 43,

Enterprise 40

A solid season for coach Shane Adam’s team in a return to 1A basketball ended Monday with a close road loss for Enterprise at Taylorsville in Smith County.

The Lady Jackets wrap up the season with an 11-9 overall record, their best record since a 10-8 mark in 2017-2018. Adams only has three seniors on the roster in Bailey Reeves, Natalie Harris and Alexandra McGee.

Junior point guard Hannah Jergins led EAC with 17 points in the loss at Taylorsville. Harris added eight points and freshman Katelynn Malone scored six points for the Lady Jackets. McGee scored five points, junior Ellie Davis added two points and freshman Natalie Williams rounded out the scoring with one point.
