Lincoln County is one of the top 20 fastest-growing counties in Mississippi, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

Stacker recently compiled a list of the state’s fastest-growing counties (1-50), ranking by highest population growth from 2010 to 2020.

A county typically sees population growth as a “bedroom community” — a municipality with an atypically large commuting population — to a large city. These communities are typically quieter than their feeder cities, offer lower rents and higher quality of living, and are remote enough to be immune to the feeder city’s crime, traffic and crowds.

Lincoln County was ranked No. 17, and six of its seven connecting neighbors also made the list.

Lincoln County gained 285 residents since the 2010 Census, ranking 1,338 among all counties nationwide. The county’s percentage growth was 0.8, ranking 1,452 nationwide and giving it the No. 17 slot on the state’s county growth. As the 20th largest county in Mississippi, Lincoln had an official population of 34,907 in the 2020 Census, ranking 1,302 nationwide for population.

Neighboring Pike County ranked 20th for growth, with a growth of 40 (0.1 percent). The 19th largest county in the state with a 2020 population of 40,324, Pike was the last in the list to include a positive number in 2010 to 2020 growth.

Franklin County had a net loss of -455, or -5.6 percent, ranking 28th on the list. The 77th largest county in the state, Franklin had a 2020 population of 7,675.

Amite County ranked No. 35 with a loss of 598 residents (-4.5 percent). With a population of 12,720, Amite is the 61st largest county.

Jefferson ranked No. 39 with a net loss of 710 people, or -8.9 percent. The 79th largest county in the state, its 2020 population was 7,260.

Lawrence County ranked No. 43 with a negative 1,000 population change down to 12,016. The 64th largest county had a population change of -7.7 percent.

Copiah had a loss of 1,153 people (-3.9 percent), ranking 47 on the list. It’s population of 28,368 makes it the 29th largest county in the state.
