The Brookhaven Fire Department was dispatched to calls an average of 24 times per month during 2021.
According to end-of-year data supplied by BFD Chief Jeff Ainsworth, the department was dispatched a total of 288 times. Fire fighters responded to 22 structure fires — homes, businesses or other structures.
There were 13 vehicle fires, and 15 calls to fires in grass or “other.”
Fire fighters also responded to 35 emergency medical service calls and/or motor vehicle wrecks.
They answered 33 hazardous calls, with no fire, and 61 service calls.
Fifty-six calls were for alarms.
The 2021 numbers do not include calls that came into fire departments where units were not dispatched.
“That’s about average numbers” for a year, Ainsworth said. “Alarms are up, most likely because more people have them.”
Because the new digital reporting system utilized by BFD places calls into more than one category, future reports should provide a better comparison against previous years “because of how we are entering data,” Ainsworth said.
