The Mississippi Department of Archives and History has approved an application for a state historical marker for the community of Norfield.

The south Lincoln County community was established about 1886 as a sawmill town and incorporated in 1894, named for Frederick Norwood and John S. Butterfield, founders of the Norwood-Butterfield Lumber Company.

The marker is expected to be delivered in fall 2021, with the proposed installation location at Fox Road and Overpass Trail, just east of Hwy. 51 S.

A dedication ceremony will be scheduled after the marker is installed.

The Lincoln County Historical and Genealogical Society is accepting contributions to help pay the $2,120 cost of the sign. Contributions can be sent to LCHGS, P.O. Box 150, Brookhaven, MS 39602, with checks indicated as for the Norfield Marker. Contributions will also be accepted at the LCHGS Museum, 227 South Church St., Brookhaven, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., or sent by PayPal to history39601@gmail.com.
