The Christmas tree lighting scheduled for Dec. 3 in Brookhaven has been canceled, but there will be other socially distanced activities coming soon.

The Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce has planned “Downtown in December,” which will consist of different activities that follow state guidelines.

“Due to Gov. Reeves’ most recent mandates in our area, the Downtown Tree Lighting Event was canceled originally planned for Dec. 3,” Program Director Katie Nations said. “The tree was lit last Wednesday evening instead and will be on each evening until Jan. 2.”

The tree, standing at 32’ tall in front of the Military Museum, weighs in at 3,700 pounds and boasts more than 15,000 lights.

“It looks great, and everybody that came together to put it up did a spectacular job,” Executive Director Garrick Combs said at the Tuesday aldermen meeting.

A life-sized picture frame will be installed next to the tree by the chamber so residents can take pictures. Santa Claus’ sleigh will also be set up near the tree for socially distanced photo opportunities.

“We are hoping Santa can make some appearances as well as have a little live music depending on mandates lifted,” Nations said.

The log cabin located at South Whitworth Avenue will be decorated inside and out so residents and visitors may tour it. The cabin will be open Thursday-Saturday from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. until Christmas Day. There will be a 1950s antique truck near the log cabin so residents may take pictures with it.

“We hope locals and visitors admire and take photos with family and friends for a socially distanced safe activity through the holidays,” Nations said.
