As it always happens when West Lincoln hits the road, there is sure to be a sea of green and white traveling south Friday when the West Lincoln Lady Bears (19-8) head to Poplarville for their MHSAA 2A quarterfinal matchup with Bay Springs.
The Lady Bears and Lady Bulldogs (23-4) are set to meet at 4 p.m. on Friday in White Coliseum on the campus of Pearl River Community College.
Friday night in their second-round matchup with Union (23-8), the Lady Bears got 24 points, six rebounds and three steals from junior forward Britany Sturkey.
The Lady Bears jumped out to a 19-3 lead after the first quarter as they cruised to a 62-50 win. Shooting 7-of-15 from the 3-point line in the friendly confines of Jack Case Gymnasium — coach Brooks Smith and is crew were never seriously threatened by the visiting Lady Yellow Jackets.
Freshman point guard Kara Beth Addison and senior forward Bailey Wilson each chipped in 13 points apiece. Addison handed out eight assists and made seven steals while Wilson grabbed seven rebounds. Freshman forward Ta’Kyla Brothern added six points, junior forward Mya Brown scored four points and senior forward Paige Shedd rounded out the WL scoring with two points. Shedd also blocked a game high four shots.
Bay Springs has built a reputation of a team that plays hard and fast led by their guards. Smith says his team will need to be the one dictating the flow of the game.
“We’ll need to make shots, rebound on both ends and limit our turnovers,” said Smith. “When you get this far there are no cupcakes left. We’ll need to play a complete game.”
