The Wesson Cobras are the lone area team hosting a playoff game tonight as the MHSAA postseason begins. Both West Lincoln and Loyd Star will be on the road for their opening round game.
Wesson hosting Taylorsville
Expect an up-tempo game in the Snake Pit tonight as coach Rusty Newman and his Wesson Cobras (14-11) host the Taylorsville Tartars (18-6).
Wesson battled with Amite County Friday night in the Region 7-2A championship game. Amite County led 33-31 at halftime before steadily building that margin in the second half.
Senior forward Kenner Bizot, senior guard Darrian Gibson, junior guard Antrelle Sims and junior guard Larson Lewis were all named All-Region after the championship game. Bizot was named Region MVP as well.
Taylorsville lost 100-84 to Bay Springs in the Region 5-2A district semifinals.
Cobra head coach Rusty Newman says the Tartars will be an athletic opponent for his team tonight.
“They’re very athletic on film,” said Newman. “They’re a tough group for the no. 3 seed.”
Junior Ty Keyes — one of the top quarterback prospects in the state — scores over 15 points per game for Taylorsville and coach Brandon Jennings.
Tipoff in Copiah County is set for 6 p.m. tonight.
Loyd Star plays at Bay Springs
Coach Seth Britt and his Loyd Star Hornets (13-15) travel to face 2A powerhouse Bay Springs (16-12) tonight in Jasper County in the opening round of the 2A playoffs.
The Hornet are the no. 3 seed from Region 7-2A after beating West Lincoln 57-48 in the consolation game Friday night. It was the first win for Loyd Star over West Lincoln in their fourth matchup of the season.
Seniors Reese DeHart and Stephen Mills were named to the All-Region game after the win over West Lincoln.
Bay Springs was beaten 74-53 by Heidelberg in the Region 5-2A championship game Friday night. The Bulldogs are defending 2A state champions after they beat Ingomar 56-51 last season to finish 31-3 for coach Corey Mackey.
The game gets underway at 6 p.m. tonight at Bay Springs.
Bears visiting Heidelberg
West Lincoln is also traveling to Jasper County tonight as they meet the Heidelberg Oilers in a MHSAA 2A playoff game.
Coach Brooks Smith and his Bears (14-12) are tasked with stopping a Heidelberg team (23-6) that has been one of the best in the state this season.
A 66-49 loss to Bay Springs was the only division blemish for the Oilers. All of their other losses this season were to schools from larger classifications.
After their loss to Loyd Star in their consolation game seniors Karlton Byrd, Michael Brothern and Anthony “Peanut” Hughes were all recognized on the All-Region team.
Tipoff at Heidelberg is scheduled for 6 p.m. tonight.
