(AP) — A Mississippi police department will be outfitted with body cameras in an attempt to become more transparent.

News outlets report the Jackson Police Department unveiled the cameras Tuesday and will begin training Thursday.

Jackson Police spokesman Sam Brown says officers are required to turn the cameras on once they’re alerted of a call and continue recording until the call is considered complete. Failure to record will result in disciplinary actions.

The city and the Department of Justice purchased 271 cameras for every patrol officer, along with cloud storage.

The cameras are another move by Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba to update and modernize the department.

Brown says the cameras will improve productivity, accountability and could reduce the number of excessive force complaints.

The department has faced several allegations of police brutality.
