Sales tax receipts for Brookhaven dipped a bit for February, but added to a total that remains higher than that of the previous year.

The city collected just shy of $430,000 from the state for sales tax diversions from February. Although the amount is a significant drop from January’s $520,211.12, the February receipts of $429,992.91 are well above the corresponding month in 2018. That month’s receipts were more than $17,540 less.

The year-to-date totals, since the beginning of the fiscal year on July 1, are higher than 2018’s numbers, as well. The city has collected a total of $3,807,651.73, compared to last year’s $3,775,593.74 — a difference of more than $32,000.

The state collected a total of $33,123,452.90 in sales tax receipts for February, an increase of $1,108,404.14 over January.

Sales tax data is provided by the Mississippi Department of Revenue. Sales tax has a three month cycle. In Month 1, tax is collected by the retailer. In Month 2, tax is reported and paid to the Department of Revenue by the retailer. In Month 3, diversion is paid by the Department of Revenue to the cities.
