‘We need to know what’s going on’ — Board president denies travel for constable

The president of the Lincoln County Board of Supervisors is staying true to his word.
The Rev. Jerry Wilson, who is over District 1, has made it known by his voting record that he won’t approve any county employee’s travel expense unless that individual or their department head makes the request in person before the board.
“Why didn’t he come?” Wilson asked Constable Post 2 Lavon Boyd at the beginning of the board meeting Monday.
Boyd asked for approval for Kelly Porter, Post 1 constable, and himself to attend a meeting of the Mississippi Constables Association on the Gulf Coast during the first week in June. Registration is due next week.
“I don’t know,” Boyd said. “He’s probably working somewhere, but I haven’t talked to him this morning, so I’m asking for both of us.”
District 5 Supervisor Doug Falvey made the motion to approve the travel for both constables.
“I’ll vote for him but I ain’t going to vote for Kelly because he should be here. We need to know what’s going on,” Wilson said.
Knowing how Wilson would vote, Chancery Clerk Tillmon Bishop advised the board the motions should be separate for the constables’ travel request.
Falvey made the motion to approve Porter’s request and after a second, the vote was 4-1 with Wilson saying “no.”
After a motion and second for Boyd’s request, it passed unanimously.
The board will meet Tuesday at 9 a.m. to go over the county dockets and ask questions of County Administrator David Fields before they vote.
