The Mississippi Economic Council is traveling the state to hear what residents and merchants have to say about their area and they’ll be in Brookhaven today.

The “MEC Tour: Celebrating Success — Focusing on the Future” will be at Mitchell’s Special Events & Catering beginning at 11:30 a.m., said Garrick Combs, executive director of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber of Commerce. The event is free and open to the public, however registration is required at msmec.com.

Lunch will be provided.

Members of the MEC will discuss economic and workforce development as well as various infrastructure and community programs during the 90-minute meeting. They’re looking for input and feedback from the community on how to make the state a great place to live and grow, said Combs.

“They tout themselves as the statewide Chamber of Commerce,” Combs said. “Typically what they do, they will take a tour around the state and talk about the success they had last year on the programs they focused on and what we need to look forward to in the future.”

Combs said the MEC seeks information from each community they visit and determines what’s the most important thing for that specific region such to focus on. MEC representatives will visit 18 stops on the tour by Feb. 9.

“They are trying to guage in terms of the legislative agenda starting in January,” he said. “Their goal is to get the Legislature to consider some of their ideas.”

Combs said the Chamber is excited to host MEC once again. “We really appreciate them coming to Brookhaven and engaging to see what our needs are for the future,” said Combs. “I look forward to working with them to help improve our community and communities across the state.”
