Hoopfest is back on.

The basketball tournament was postponed in July due to inclement weather. With this weekend’s forecast looking promising, organizers for the tournament are hoping to have a great turnout on Saturday.

“We’re excited about it,” said Hoopfest organizer Glen Sanders. “We’ve added a three-point contest and a dunk contest for the youth. There will be different sized goals in order for everyone to have a fair shot.”

Sanders, owner of The Shop, and William Price, with the Deep South Riders motorcycle group, are responsible for bringing back the event this year.

It will be a fundraiser for the Boys & Girls Club of Lincoln County.

“When I was a kid, Hoopfest was a big deal,” Sanders said. “The game of basketball is so important to me and I want to give kids the chance to compete and have fun.”

Hoopfest is a basketball tournament with several age groups for competing athletes so everyone can participate. The competition is open to boys and girls.

Age groups are 7-10, 11-14, 15-17 and 18 and over.

“It’s always a good time,” Sanders said. “We will be awarding trophies to the champions in each age group and giving away T-shirts to the people participating. We will also be giving away school supplies for those in need.”

The entry fee is a $80 per team.

The event will take place Saturday in the parking lot next to Railroad Park in downtown Brookhaven.

“This is our second annual event,” Price said. “Glen and I just wanted to do something positive for the community and to give the kids something to do.”

“I love watching my kids participating and interacting with their friends and with different people in the community.” said Sanders. “I hope we can continue to grow this event and get it back to how it used to be.”
