‘Advocate’ to speak at school board

The Lincoln County School Board is continuing its road trip through the county Monday, this time meeting at West Lincoln Attendance Center, where at least one disgruntled woman plans to be heard.
The meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at the school, which is located at 948 Jackson-Liberty Drive SW.
The board met March 6 at Bogue Chitto Attendance Center in anticipation of a larger crowd than would fit in the board room at the district office. The board’s attorney, Jim Keith, suggested the board meet at each of the four attendance centers to give the public in those areas easier access to the meetings to see how the board conducts its business.
About three dozen individuals attended the meeting two weeks ago at Bogue Chitto. Two Lincoln County Sheriff’s deputies stood along the wall in case the crowd became unruly.
A meeting Feb. 21 had gotten out of hand after some individuals who were not on the agenda spoke accusingly to the board.
Among those to speak was self-described child advocate Melissa Posey. Posey requested to be placed on the agenda for the March 6 meeting but was denied because, according to a letter sent to her from Superintendent Mickey Myers, her request was “so general that it is impossible to determine specifically what you want to discuss.”
Posey’s letter from Myers, which she posted on Facebook, continued, “At the last board meeting, you discussed recordings you had placed on social media, you accused the board of corruption and you asked for a principal’s termination. However, there is nothing given in your request regarding your topic other than a ‘new plan.’ Without more, it is impossible to tell whether you have followed the chain of command in addressing your issues.”
Posey’s said her request to be placed on the agenda Monday has also been denied along with others who made similar requests.
“Once again they came up with some lame excuse for not letting us on the agenda,” she said.
However, Myers said Posey is on the agenda for Monday’s meeting.
She said she has followed the chain of command for her complaints and hasn’t been satisfied with the outcome.
“The children have got to be taken care of,” she said.
Myers said that Posey had questioned special education funding, which is not a board issue. “Fedderal Prgram coordinator Letha Presley and I are willing to meet with Miss Posey at her convenience to listen to her concerns,” he said.
Posey is encouraging taxpayers to attend the meeting to “see how the school board is using their tax money at meetings to keep us quiet.”
She plans to speak at the meeting regardless of the denial letter from the superintendent.
“I am going to be heard Monday night though, whatever I’ve got to do,” she said. “If it’s going to have to be a commotion, there’s going to be a commotion,” she said. “As much as I can, I’m going to stay within the law and their policy.”
Keith said March 6 that the public is welcome at all public meetings and can record audio or video of the meetings “as long as it’s not disruptive of the meeting.”
Posey arrived at that meeting several minutes after it adjourned.
Myers said Keith as well as law enforcement officers will again attend the meeting Monday.
