Wesson Cobras drop both games against Port Gibson

The Wesson Cobras were defeated by the Port Gibson Blue Wave Friday night by a final score of 73-54.
“This was a tough game in a tough environment,” Wesson head coach Rusty Newman said. “We couldn’t get any shots to fall early on in the game and dug ourselves a hole. In the second half, I felt we played a little better and I am proud of my guys for playing hard all night.”
The Blue Wave took the early lead and maintained their big point spread after halftime to take the win.
For the Cobras on offense, the top scorer was sophomore guard JD Allen with 16 points. Sophomore guard Shemar Dickerson followed up on scoring with 13 points. Other top scorers include sophomore forward Jontavius Smith with 10 points and senior guard Will Hulon with seven points. The Cobras shot 8-of-16 from the free throw line for the game.
Lady Blue Wave 43, Lady Cobras 32
The Port Gibson Lady Blue Wave hosted the Lady Cobras Friday night and took the win by a final score of 36-21.
“The girls played hard and didn’t give up. I was really proud of their effort,” Wesson head coach Candice McDuffey said. “We kept the score within 10 points until about three minutes into the fourth quarter. We learned how to get through the third quarter so now we have to learn how to close out a game.”
The game started with the Lady Blue Wave taking a lead and holding the Lady Cobras on offense at 22-15 going into the half. After the half, the Lady Cobras battled on offense, but couldn’t close the gap with Port Gibson securing the win.
For the Lady Cobras, the top scorer was senior guard Alashya Vaughn with nine points. Other top scorers for Wesson included senior guard Aurianna Vaughn with eight points, sophomore guard Alashyia Mims with six points and freshman guard Shelbi Maxwell with five points. The Lady Cobras shot 14-of-21 from the free throw line.
Wesson will host Wilkinson County Tuesday night. Game times are 6 p.m. for the girls and 7:30 p.m. for the Cobras.
