Media gathered in Hoover Monday-Thursday from the farthest stretches of the Southeastern Conference to attend the 2016 SEC Media Days.
During the event, media in attendance cast their votes for the 2016 Preseason All-SEC teams. The results of the vote were released on Friday.
A total of eight athletes from Mississippi’s competing schools were honored with a selection to one of the teams.
The University of Mississippi was represented by Chad Kelly, Evan Engram, Tony Conner, Javon Patterson and Marquis Haynes.
Mississippi State had three of its standout seniors in Fred Ross, Richie Brown and A.J. Jefferson earn spots on the team.
The Rebels’ lone first team All-SEC selection, Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly is highly regarded as one of the best quarterbacks in the SEC after a breakout 2015 season.
Kelly broke 14 single-season school records during the Rebels’ 10-win season including total offense (4,542 yards), completion percentage (65.1), passing efficiency (155.9), 300-yard passing games (8) and touchdowns responsible for (41).
Senior Tight end Evan Engram (Second Team All-SEC) stands as the all-time leader in receptions (97) by a tight end.
Also on the second team, senior defensive back Tony Conner hopes to come back strong after being limited to just five game last year due to injury.
Javon Patterson and Marquis Haynes were both chosen to the third team.
As a sophomore, Patterson is the youngest of the Rebels’ All-SEC selections. He is the first Rebel true freshman to start at offensive lineman in his college debut since John Jerry in 2006.
Haynes recorded 10 sacks in a breakout 2015 season, which was good for fifth in the conference.
MSU’s Fred Ross highlights the Bulldogs All-SEC team selections. The senior returns after leading the conference in receptions per game at 6.8
Richie Brown (third team) led the team in tackles (109) and sacks last season (6.5) and will likely be the heart and soul of the Bulldogs defense during his senior campaign.
A.J. Jefferson (third team) led MSU in tackles for loss in his junior year, with 13.5 and looks to even out his production after dropping off a bit toward the end of last season.
