Sandlin named All-American

HATTIESBURG — Southern Miss relief pitcher Nick Sandlin collected his second Freshman All-America accolade, Tuesday, as Perfect Game/Rawlings honored him with a second-team spot following an outstanding initial season with the Golden Eagle program.
The right-handed hurler from Evans, Ga., registered a 3-3 record with a school freshman record 12 saves during his initial year with the program.
In 26 relief appearances, Sandlin posted a 2.38 earned run average and fanned 44 in 41 2/3 innings.
He allowed just 32 hits and 20 walks en route to also picking up Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball Freshman All-America honors. Sandlin also earned a spot on the Conference USA All-Freshman team.
During the year, he collected a win and a save on consecutive days against nationally ranked Rice, and also earned his first and second career victories over league foes Marshall and UTSA in back-to-back outings.
The Golden Eagles finished the season at 41-20, making their 13th NCAA Tournament appearance in the program’s history.
Sandlin was one of two Conference USA players honored as Ford Proctor of Rice, garnered a first-team nod at shortstop.
