District 92 Rep. Becky Currie, R-Brookhaven, will attend the Republican National Convention in July as a delegate who will formally choose the Republican nominee.

Because Donald Trump won the primary held in Mississippi in March, Currie is obligated to vote for him. He will almost certainly be the Republican nominee. But for Currie, Trump was already her first choice. Currie said she also believes he will make a strong nominee for the general election, which draws a larger and more diverse crowd than the primary elections.

“There are millions and millions of voters who came out to vote for Donald who have never come out to vote before,” she said. “He’s already drawing people who used to sit home and never vote. That’s one plus. It looks like he’s going to be running against Hillary Clinton. There’s a lot of people who didn’t want another Bush in the presidency, and there’s a lot of people who don’t want another Clinton.”

Currie said she will also serve on the National Organizational Committee, where she will be working behind the scenes to organize events.

“I’m very excited,” Currie said. “Years ago, I had gone to New Orleans to one. It was in the Superdome. Now I’m going to be on the floor as a delegate. I love politics, but it’s probably the only time I’ll ever get to do something like this so I’m going to go and enjoy myself and watch history made.”

There are 2,470 delegates and 2,302 alternate delegates attending the convention, according to the convention website. It will take place in the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio from July 18-21, and about 50,000 are expected to visit Cleveland during the event.
