Funeral services for Mattie Mae Nelson Fells Byrd are Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at 3 p.m. at Cool Springs M.B. Church in McCall Creek with burial in Nelson Cemetery Cemetery. Williams Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation is Monday, May 9, 2016, from 1 until 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Family hour will be from 6 to 7 p.m.
Mrs. Byrd, 80, died on Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at King’s Daughters Medical Center. She was born Nov. 12, 1935, in Franklin County to Wilson Williams and Eloise Nelson.
She was employed with Auburn Sportswear (formerly Stahl-Urban) for 30 years and retired in November 1997. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and was baptized at Christian Springs M.B. Church in McCall Creek and later joined Macedonia UM Church where she served as a faithful and dedicated usher and member of the church choir until her health failed. She was a member of the Brookhaven Homemaker’s Club, member of the Lincoln & Adjoining Counties Fourth Sunday Singing Union and a member of the Lincoln County Vocal Choir. In 1976, she became an active and dedicated member to the heroines of Jericho, serving as the “most ancient matron” of Ruth Court No. 510 in McCall Creek, where she faithfully served for 39 years until her health began to fail.
Preceding her in death were her mother, Eloise Nelson; her father, Wilson Williams; brothers, Herman Lee Jr. and Eddie Adams; son-in-law, Lamar Jones; and son, Stanley Edward Fells.
Survivors are her brother, Larry Donnell Williams; children, Sandra Carol Jones of Flint, Michigan, Bonita Gail Fells of Brookhaven, Tammy Marie Fells of Brookhaven, Jacqueline Fells of Flint and Pamela Faye Fells of Brandon, Ronald Lynn Fells and Richard Fells, both of Brookhaven; 21 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren; 40 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of stepchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
