The Brookhaven Police Department arrested two people following a vehicle pursuit Tuesday afternoon.

BPD was responding to a shoplifting call at Walmart Tuesday afternoon when the manager approached the police officers about a white female trying to return a new phone for cash, Police Chief Bobby Bell said. The manager said the phone did not come from Walmart, he said.

When a BPD officer approached the female, Megan Watson, she stated that another male was holding her and her boyfriend hostage, Bell said. Watson told the officers her boyfriend and the male were outside in a vehicle, according to Bell.

Officers proceeded to follow the woman outside and approach the vehicle, Bell said. Upon arrival, Watson’s boyfriend rolled out of the vehicle and the other male drove off and eventually headed south on I-55, he said.

Bell said the officers pursued the vehicle to County Line Road in Pike County, where the male, Donald Dwyer of Picayune, exited the vehicle and fled on foot. BPD and Mississippi Highway Patrol apprehended Dwyer on Bella Road, he said.

Dwyer was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of hydrocodone and felony fleeing. Bell said Dwyer was also wanted by Harrison County authorities.

Watson, of Harrison County, was charged with the possession of spice. The other male was not charged.

Bell said he does not believe Watson and her boyfriend were being held hostage, but that it was a story Watson fabricated.
