Spring is upon us, and that means it’s time to start spring cleaning. Keep Lincoln County Beautiful will make the task of disposing of large items a little easier for residents this year.
KLCB is sponsoring the Lincoln County Great American Cleanup throughout April and May. The dumpster days schedule is as follows:
• April 7-10: Lot on Monticello Street east of County Farm Road
• April 14-17: Lot at Newman Road and Old Hwy. 51
• April 21-24: Lot at Hwy. 51 and Bogue Chitto Road
• April 28-May 1: Intersection of Jackson-Liberty Road and West Lincoln Drive
• May 5-May 8: Lot at James Case’s Store on California Road
“This is really an extension of our litter control program,” Homer Richardson, board member for Keep Lincoln County Beautiful, said. “Our goal is to keep Lincoln County beautiful, and dumpster days is a part of that.”
Items that should be disposed of in the dumpsters are furniture, mattresses, TVs, building materials and similar items. Personal tires and white goods — refrigerators, air conditioners and stoves — and other large items should be placed on the ground near the dumpster.
No paint, oil or any hazardous materials should be disposed in the dumpsters. KLCB will host a hazardous materials cleanup in 2017. Commercial tires and household garbage will not be accepted. KLCB requests that people do not scavenge at the dumpsters.
The Lincoln County Great American Cleanup is focused on giving people an opportunity to dispose of large items they would normally take to the dump, Richardson said.
“If you don’t have some way for people to get rid of these materials, then people start creating their own dumps,” Richardson said. “Not only does it cause an unsightly issue, it causes issues with rats and mosquitos. If you make it easy for people to get rid of stuff, then it makes our job easier too. People don’t want to pay a fee to take stuff to the dump, so then it gets dumped on the side of the road or under low-water bridges. Trying to get stuff up from those places is really difficult.”
Richardson said KLCB has being conducting dumpster days since 2000, and it has helped Lincoln County tremendously.
“People put items aside, specifically for dumpster days,” Richardson said. “They sort of expect it now. This is a beautiful state, and sometimes we forget how easy it is to trash it.”
