The Brookhaven Servitium Club’s 65th annual Tom Moak Memorial Pancake and Sausage Day will be Feb. 16 from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the State Room at State Bank.

“We cook ‘em. We serve ‘em. We do it all,” this year’s event chair Shelley Harrigill said. “We’re there all day. It’s fun to have people actually come in and dine in. It’s kind of like a little restaurant.”

Pancake Day in Brookhaven began in 1951 when the Servitium Club was known as the Kiwanis Club. Tom Moak — who joined the Kiwanis Club in 1948 — was present at the first Pancake Day in Brookhaven in 1951. He also attended every Pancake Day to follow until his death 62 years later on Nov. 30, 2013. After that, the newly created Servitium Club — having broken ties with the national Kiwanis organization the year before in order to keep the money raised in the community — decided to rename Pancake Day in his honor.

Harrigill said the Servitium Club expects to sell between 1,200-1,500 plates. Proceeds go to youth-related programs in the community.

“We give money to scholarships, and we also give money to school programs and community programs like Baptist Children’s Village,” Harrigill said. “We give to programs where children have a need in the community, whether it be a need for supplies or financial aid. For example, this year we voted to do the backpack drive. So people approach us and then we vote about where those funds need to go.”

Tickets for plates are $6. Tickets can be bought in advance from Servitium Club members or they can be bought at the event. Plates can be purchased to-go, or visitors can dine in for all-you-can-eat pancakes.

Along with the annual fundraiser and charitable activities, the Servitium Club also has regular meetings every Wednesday at Poppas Fish House.
