The John Krasinski movie that was partially filmed in Brookhaven is scheduled to premier Jan. 29 at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah.
“The Hollars” was originally set to film entirely in Jackson. Krasinkski, who is both a lead actor and the director of the movie, decided to film part of the movie at King’s Daughters Medical Center after looking for a hospital with a double patient room and other amenities that couldn’t be found in the Jackson area.
“John really fell in love with this hospital,” the production crew location manager Brian Hillburn said. “He didn’t want something gray and sterile looking.”
Krasinski was looking for a small-town feel on screen, film representatives said.
Hillburn said Krasinski’s enthusiasm over KDMC, combined with the hospital’s cooperation with the filming crew, was a “marriage made in heaven.”
David Culpepper, KDMC marketing director, said the staff and patients at the hospital were positive and encouraging throughout the filming process, which took place in 2014.
“The No. 1 goal of the hospital is our mission statement — providing quality health and wellness in a Christian environment — and the filming did not interrupt that process in the least,” said Culpepper.
The Sundance Film Festival describes “The Hollars” as a “big-hearted family comedy” where John Hollar, played by Krasinski, returns to his small hometown after his mother is diagnosed with a brain tumor.
At one point, a producer said the movie would possibly be released under a different name, but it appears it will remain “The Hollars.”
“Krasinski, last seen at the Sundance Film Festival with his directorial debut “Brief Interviews with Hideous Men” (2009), takes a gentle approach to the dysfunctional Hollar clan, leavening the heart-tugging drama with inspired character-driven comedy,” Sundance said. “The large ensemble cast (including Richard Jenkins, Sharlto Copley, Josh Groban, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and Mary Kay Place) gives the relationships a lived-in feeling, while Krasinski offers a warm, funny, warts-and-all look at the importance of family.”
Along with KDMC, scenes were also shot at Janie’s Pastry.
