LCHS junior leads All-Area Team

Lawrence County junior running back Quitten Brown powered the Cougars’ rushing attack with 245 carries for 2,012 yards and scored 32 rushing touchdowns.

Brown also caught 13 passes for 326 yards and scored four touchdowns. He returned two kickoffs for touchdowns, returned a pass interception for a touchdown, and even recovered a blocked punt for a touchdown. In all, Brown scored 40 touchdowns on the season. On defense, Brown recorded 64 tackles and had three pass interceptions.

For these accomplishments Brown has been selected as The Daily Leader’s Overall Most Valuable Offensive Player.

“I am very honored to be named the All-Area MVP,” Brown said.

The All-Area Offensive Team is made up of players inside and outside of Lincoln County with stats being provided by high school coaches. Having 11 schools in The Daily Leader’s coverage area, the dream team selection has been reformatted to First Team selection, Second Team selection and honorable mention.

The All-Area Defensive Team and Coach of the Year will be revealed next Sunday.

Receiving honors at quarterback on the First Team is Charl’Tez Nunnery of Lawrence County and Ladarrious Williams of Hazlehurst.

Helping Brown in the backfield are Damarion Wilson of Hazlehurst, Thomas Poole of Brookhaven and Cortney Smith of Franklin County.

The aerial attack features wide receivers Marcus Atterberry of Lawrence County, Antonio Christmas of Franklin County and Jaquaveon Tillman of Hazlehurst.

The offensive line includes Brandon Armstrong of Lawrence County, Wanya Morris of Brookhaven, Morgan Starks of Franklin County, Blake Williams of Lawrence County and Brandon Rice of Brookhaven.

Tyler Mixon of Brookhaven was selected as the team place kicker. Rykendrick Harness of Lawrence County has been selected the return specialist.

De’Martre Collins of Franklin County and Cornelius Barlow are the all-purpose players.

The players receiving Second Team honors were Jacob McDaniel of Franklin County and Madison Smith of Brookhaven Academy at quarterback.

In the backfield are Parker Flowers of Loyd Star, Malik Gray of Hazlehurst, Tanner Waldrop of Enterprise and Kobe Roberts of Bogue Chitto at the running back position.

Receivers chosen are Chase Owens of West Lincoln, Ross Felder of Brookhaven Academy and T-Tez Cole of Lawrence County.

Working in the trenches of the offensive line are LeChris Hood of Hazlehurst, Ben Cowart of Franklin County, Matthew Craft of Wesson, Nick Smith of Loyd Star and Shawntavis Vardaman of Hazlehurst.

Second Team place kicker is Josh Stephens of Lawrence County. James Beard of Loyd Star was chosen as the return specialist. Conner Douglas of Bogue Chitto and Zach Hodges of Enterprise earned the all-purpose honors.

Quitten Brown (5-7, 190, jr.),  the son of Tisha Fields, had a break-out season in 2015 as he helped lead his Lawrence County Cougars to a 13-2 season. Lawrence County dominated the regular season to win the Region 6-4A crown undefeated and clinched the No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

In the Cougars’ playoff run, Lawrence County crushed the Columbia Wildcats 40-21 in the opening round, defeated East Central 26-20 in double overtime in the second round and knocked off Vancleave 35-21 on the roar in the third round to host their first ever South State championship in Monticello.

In the South State championship contest, the Cougars fell to the St. Stanislaus Rock-A-Chaws 62-28. Brown powered the Cougars in that game with 16 carries for 146 yards and two touchdowns.

“We had a great season as a team and as a community,” Brown said. “We are looking forward to next season as we are already working hard to stronger so that we can get back to the south state championship and have a different outcome.”

“Quitten is a great player and a great kid,” coach Jaymie Palmer said. “He works extremely hard and he is a very explosive player that can make big plays from anywhere on the field. He had an unbelievable year in which he scored 40 touchdowns in a season and he plays defense as well.”

First Team

Charl’Tez Nunnery (5-10, 150, jr.) directed Lawrence County’s offense as he completed 74-of-163 passes for 1,283 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also rushed for 961 yards on 184 carries.

Ladarrious Williams (5-9, 185, sr.) powered Hazlehurst’s offense completing 25-of-42 passes for 633 yards and 10 touchdowns. Williams rushed for 1,056 yards on the season on 111 carries and had 16 touchdowns.

Damarion Brown (5-11, 185, jr.) used his blazing speed to gain 1,417 yards on 130 carries and scored 13 TDs for the Indians.

Thomas Poole (5-9, 170, sr.) was the leader in Brookhaven’s rushing attack as he compiled 1,238 yards on 182 carries and scored 10 touchdowns.

Cortney Smith (5-11, 183, sr.)  used his speed to direct the Bulldogs on the ground as he rushed for 1,035 yards on 197 carries and scored six touchdowns..

Marcus Atterberry (6-0, 195, jr.)  was Lawrence County’s second leading receiver with 21 catches for 293 yards and two touchdowns.

Antonio Christmas (5-10, 165, sr.) was Franklin County’s leading receiver with 21 receptions for 353 yards and three touchdowns.

Jaquaveon Tillman (5-11, 185, jr.) led the Indians’ aerial attack with 11 receptions for 379 yards and six touchdowns.

Brandon Armstrong (6-1, 240, sr.) was one of the leaders on LCHS’s offensive line.

Wanya Morris (6-2, 265, sr.) worked in the trenches on the Panthers’ offense.

Morgan Starks (5-8, 225, sr.)  showed off his skills on the Bulldogs’ offensive line.

Blake Williams (5-9, 235, sr.) played a big role in Lawrence County’s offensive line.

Brandon Rice (6-1, 260, sr.)  was instrumental in the BHS rushing attack.

Tyler Mixon (5-5, 118, soph.)  made 12-of-12 extra point attempts and was perfect in his field goal attempts, nailing 2-of-2 with his longest being 24 yards.

Rykendrick Harness (5-7, 160, sr.) brought plenty of excitement with his kickoff return skills as he finished with 351 yards.

De’Martre Collins (5-8, 170, jr.)  had a great junior year, leading the Bulldogs to a return trip to the playoffs. Collins had 480 rushing yards, 338 receiving yards, 167 punt return yards, 105 interception return yards for a total 1,432 yards for the season.

Cornelius Barlow (5-3, 165, sr.)  powered Wesson’s offensive attack as he finished with 1,159 all-purpose yards for the 2015 season.

Second Team 

Jacob McDaniel (5-9, 165, soph.) ran Franklin County’s offense. He completed 38-of-118 passes for 707 yards and rushed for 207 yards on 84 carries.

Madison Smith (5-10, 160, jr.) was the leader in the backfield for Brookhaven Academy. He led the Cougars’ passing attack by completing 96-of-202 passes for 882 yards and had 89 carries for 150 rushing yards.

Parker Flowers (6-0, 190, jr.)  was Loyd Star’s impact player in the backfield. He rushed for 1,028 yards on 174 carries and had 16 touchdowns. Flowers also completed 42-of-113 passes for 656 yards and had six touchdowns.

Malik Gray (5-7, 145, jr.)  was Hazlehurst’s second leading rushing with 1,206 yards on 91 carries for a total of eight touchdowns.

Tanner Waldrop (5-7, 140, soph.)  broke the 1,000 rushing mark for the Jackets as he rushed for 1,015 yards and scored 11 touchdowns.

Kobe Roberts (5-10, 165, sr.)  directed the Bobcats in a rebuilding season. He posted 568 yards rushing on 96 carries and caught 20 passes for 287 yards for a total of six touchdowns.

Chase Owens (6-2, 180, soph.)  played a key role in West Lincoln’s aerial attack as he caught 41 passes for 763 yards.

Ross Felder (5-10, 160, sr.)  helped BA’s air assault with 413 yards receiving on 36 catches.

T-Tez Cole (5-10, 175, jr.)  played an instrumental role in the Lawrence County’s season. Cole played in several different positions. He finished with 644 rushing yards and 260 receiving yards.

LeChris Hood (6-3, 280, sr.)  is a veteran offensive lineman for the Indians.

Ben Cowart (5-11, 245, jr.)  played a big role on Franklin County’s offensive line.

Matthew Craft (5-9, 180, jr.)  used his skills to help his Cobras on offense. He had six pancake blocks for the season.

Nick Smith (6-2, 240, sr.)  showcased his talents as a lineman for Loyd Star.

Shawntavis Vardaman (6-5, 285, jr.) anchored Hazlehurst’s offensive line.

Josh Stephens (5-9, 140, jr.) was successful on 59-of-71 extra-point attempts and was 1-of-2 in field goal attempts with his longest being 25 yards.

James Beard (5-10, 150, fr.)  had a great freshmen season for the Hornets as he finished with 390 kickoff return yards and had 99 punt return yards in 12 games.

Connor Douglas (5-10, 165, sr.) helped the Bobcats as he completed 49-of-134 passes for 660 yards, and rushed for 169 yards on 66 carries for a total of five touchdowns.

Zach Hodges (5-10, 140, jr.) stepped up for the Jackets. He completed 18-of-48 passes for 288 yards and rushed for 388 yards on 72 carries.
