We prayed for rain and boy did God answer. Some places in Lincoln County received as much as 10 inches of rainfall over the weekend and Monday. That kind of rain is a blessing, but it also caused a few headaches.

A few streets were closed due to standing water — and those living in low-lying areas around creeks probably got a bit nervous. We received no reports of rising water damaging homes. Farmers who’ve hoped for rain for weeks probably got more than they needed. At least a couple businesses, including our own, found some new roof leaks and spent Monday and Tuesday cleaning up.

But the rain will allow us to hopefully say farewell to this summer’s drought. Farm ponds will again be full, hunters’ green patches will finally be green, and gardeners can put away the watering hose for now. Yes, the rain is a blessing, and we are thankful for it.

The governor on Monday announced that the statewide burn ban has been lifted. At the request and advice of the Mississippi Forestry Commission, Gov. Phil Bryant has signed a proclamation lifting the statewide burn ban that has been in force since Oct. 20.

Local jurisdictions have the authority to issue burn bans, and residents should verify with their local governments whether a ban is in place prior to engaging in outdoor burning. We couldn’t verify before press time if Lincoln County’s ban will be lifted, but it’s hard to imagine it won’t be.
