War Eagles soar past Brookhaven

WAYNESBORO – The Wayne County War Eagles soared past the Brookhaven Panthers 48-14 in Region 3-5A football action Friday night.

“Wayne County has a very talented and well-coached team,” said BHS coach Tommy Clopton. “We’re still working on getting better day by day. Homecoming is next week. We’ve got to move on and get ready for the next one.”

In the first period, Schdarious Chambers put Wayne County on the scoreboard first with a 13-yard run to take a 6-0 lead.

Later in the first, Wayne County scored another touchdown when Chris Colley sprinted 31-yards to paydirt to give the Eagles a 14-0 lead after Freddie Jordan ran in the two-point conversion.

In the second quarter, the War Eagles’ offense continued to roll as they punched in another touchdown on 25-yard strike from Reggie Stewart to Ramiek Wallace. Brett Reynolds kicked the extra point to give Wayne County a 21-0 lead. Reynolds finished four of six on the extra-point attempts.

On the following kickoff, the Panthers managed to break up Wayne County’s scoring spree midway through the second period when senior Thomas Poole galloped 91 yards for a touchdown to put Brookhaven on the board. Tyler Mixon was successful on the extra-point kick and finished two of two on the night.

Wayne County scored two more touchdown before heading into halftime.

Cooley punched in his second touchdown of the game on a 3-yard run, and Deion Smith returned an interception 37-yards for a touchdown. The War Eagles went into halftime leading 34-7.

In the third period, Wayne County cashed in two more touchdowns to increase its lead to 48-7.

Towards the end of the third, Brookhaven put its final points on the board on a 46-yard run by Poole.

Offensively, Poole was the leader for the Panthers with 24 carries for 121 yards and a touchdown. Sevante Quinn led BHS’ passing attack completing 6-of-13 passes for 41 yards. Kentravis Tanner was the top receiver with two catches for 22 yards.

For the War Eagles, Reggie Stewart led the team, completing 14-of-19 passes for 205 yards. Ramiek Wallace led all receivers with three catches for 44 yards.

Chris Cooley powered the ground attack for Wayne County with nine carries for 79 yards. Schdarious Chambers contributed six rushes for 57 yards.

Defensively, Kenneth Bellamy and Jordan Blackwell led BHS with an interception each. Willie Bates recovered a fumble. Dedric Smith and Jeffrey Johnson both caused a fumble.
