The Brookhaven Board of Aldermen recently approved a resolution creating a fire district for the Linbrook Business Park.

The Brookhaven-Lincoln County Economic Development Alliance, the economic development district that owns Linbrook Business Park, petitioned the city of Brookhaven to create a municipal fire district encompassing the business park. Creating the fire district makes it subject to the same fire protection as the city, which will mean lower insurance costs for businesses that locate there.

Brookhaven-Lincoln County Chamber Executive Director Garrick Combs said this completes the establishment process that started in late July. The creation of the Brookhaven-Lincoln County Regional Economic Development Alliance Fire Protection Grading District is a move to make the park more marketable to potential tenants.

“The Alliance and the city officials recognized an opportunity to make our park more cost-effective for our potential clients by forming this district and taking advantage of the newly lowered risk ratings recently assigned to the city,” Combs said.

Combs said in July that by cutting down on the number of miles between the park and primary responders, the fire rating would be lower and would lower insurance costs for businesses that locate there. Mayor Joe Cox said the current rating is a 10. With the city fire department becoming the primary responders the park drops to a 5.

The resolution was approved by a unanimous vote by Alderman Ward 4 Shirley Estes, Alderman Ward 5 Fletcher Grice, Alderman Ward 1 Randy Belcher, Alderman at Large Karen Sullivan and Alderman Ward 2 Terry Bates. Mary Wilson signed the resolution acting as mayor pro-tempore. Alderman Ward 6 David Phillips and Mayor Joe Cox were absent.
