Circumstances surrounding a shooting last week on South First Street remain unclear as the victim refuses to give police her statement, according to officials.

“She’s going to be the key,” Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell said about the victim. “Dorothy refuses to come in [to] give her statement at this time.”

Brookhaven police responded to a disturbance call at approximately 10:45 p.m. Friday at a car wash on South First Street. Bell said police aren’t 100 percent sure that the initial disturbance call is connected with the shooting officers discovered, but the department is working under that assumption.

Victim Dorothy “Sissy” Case was shot in an altercation that police think has something to do with a boyfriend owing someone money. According to a family member, she was dropped off at King’s Daughters Medical Center and then was transported to University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson. The family member said she was released earlier this week, and also that he doesn’t foresee her cooperating with police.

Bell said very little is known about what exactly happened and interviewing the witness is the next step in the ongoing investigation.
