Though it certainly could have been a tragedy, a 4-year-old was rescued from a dry well safely on Monday. His rescue was an answer to so many prayers and tops our list of good news for the week.

Gabe Allbritton and his dog were trapped about 23 feet down. He fell into the hole at 2116 Gene Road at about 5 p.m. on Labor Day. Crews removed the boy at about 8:05 p.m. The dog was pulled out minutes later.

“I’ve been though a lot of stuff, but nothing like that,” Zetus Volunteer Fire Department Chief Dale Anding said. “We could not have done what we did without the other volunteers around us getting resources […] the Sheriff’s Department helping with crowd control — they were just as much a part of that rescue as the ones who pulled him out.”

It was the best possible outcome — largely due to the dedication of dozens of volunteers. Allbritton was promised a ride on a fire truck when he was trapped, and local firefighters kept their end of the deal and took him for a ride Saturday.

More local students passed the third grade reading gate test, with Brookhaven seeing the number of students who didn’t pass drop from 55 to 23. In the county school district, more than 95 percent of third graders passed, which means they can promote to the fourth grade.

The No. 1 Copiah-Lincoln Wolfpack exploded for 58 unanswered points to take a 58-14 win over Mississippi Delta Thursday night. The Trojans scored 14 points in a two-minute span late in the first quarter to stun the Wolfpack and ignite the home crowd. The Wolfpack got on the board with 1:53 remaining in the first quarter when reigning National Junior College Athletic Association Offensive Player of the Week Lakedric Lee scored on a three-yard touchdown run. Lee would add another 3-yard TD run in the third quarter.

Brookway Boulevard will soon offer a new place to shop when Hobie’s Sports opens in October. Located next to Save-A-Lot, Hobie’s Sports will serve the community as a full-line sporting goods store, offering everything thing from athletics to outerwear to hunting goods.    They will feature brands such as Nike, Adidas, New Balance, UnderArmour, North Face, Patagonia and Columbia. There will be both a gun department and archery area to appeal to the outdoorsman.

“We’ll have a little bit of everything,” Hobie’s Sports owner Jason Martin-Nez said.
