The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2618 and the Lincoln County Veterans Office have come together to bring not just a day a fun, but one of knowledge and information as well.

The local VFW on Saturday will host an open house at its recently renovated building, featuring food, games and information from the Veteran’s Administration office. The event will begin at 10 a.m. and continue until 3 p.m.

Dwayne Gill, Lincoln County Veterans Officer, said they have combined the open house with the rural community outreach program. The program includes enrollment into the medical program, and veterans can check status and eligibility for certain programs and find out if disability claims can be made.

Gill said most things are moving online, so programs like this help accommodate those who are not as comfortable with electronics.

“The commander, Ken Powell, has been absolutely wonderful working with the county veteran’s office,” Gill said.

Numbers from 2014 show that there are 2,231 veterans in Lincoln County.

“The hard part is to get those veterans to come out to an event,” he said. “Veterans have a sense that they don’t want to be in the limelight.”

But Gill said they need to know what both the VFW and the VA can offer to veterans and their families.

Gill said they also have an ongoing brick memorial project for Lincoln County’s veterans. He also recommended that locals sponsor a brick for the veterans who may not have any family. He said there are plenty of names to choose from.
