Visitation is Saturday, Aug. 8, 2015, from 10 a.m. until time of services at the church.

Mr. Smith, 89, died on Wednesday, July 29, 2015, at Mercy McMahon Terrace in Sacramento, California while comforted by his wife and family members. He was born Oct. 14, 1925 in the community of Lucien in Lincoln County. He was the first son of Elmer Penn and Eunice Lucinda Smith.

A minister in the Southern Baptist Church, Truett accepted the call to ministry at 13 years of age at his home church, Friendship Baptist Church in Lincoln County. He served in the Navy during WWII in the pacific theater. Upon his discharge from the Navy, Truett enrolled in Mississippi College in Clinton. On June 27, 1947 he married Sarah Crisp at Central Baptist Church in Miami, Florida. Truett completed his bachelor’s degree and went on to receive a Masters of Divinity from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary in 1952. His first full-time pastorate was at the First Baptist Church of Sopchoppy, Florida in 1953.

Truett had a passion for people and starting churches. He started or revived churches throughout Florida in Fort Pierce, Coco, Seffner, Miami and Largo. He also served with the then Home Mission Board of the Southern Baptist Convention as a missionary to Miami Beach, Florida. He finished his formal ministerial career as the Director of Missions in Charlotte County, Florida. In retirement Truett continued to minister and serve throughout the rest of his life.

Truett always had his pocketknife. He would whittle and create everything from realistic art to things only he could have imagined.  Truett had an amazing whistling ability and could always be heard whistling birdcalls, hymns and other tunes. He whistled for his children to come to him and in his prime his whistle could be heard from over a mile away. Truett enjoyed being surrounded by family. He particularly loved taking long walks with his grandchildren sharing his vast knowledge of the great outdoors. They always loved it when he would catch a lizard and hang it from his ear and sometimes even from theirs if they were willing. In Truett’s later years he enjoyed playing chess, mostly with his son Hugh and son-in-law Eric.

Preceding him in death were his parents; and brother, Edwin E. Smith.

Survivors are his wife, Sarah (Crisp) Smith; daughter, Paula Jo (Smith) McCall and her husband, S. Eric McCall; sons, Hugh Willis Smith and wife, Marsha (Anderson) Smith, and Allen Penn Smith and wife, Angela (Stewart) Smith; sister, Isabel (Smith) Coney; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
