Braves even series, defeat Generals

PEARL — The Mississippi Braves took a 2-1 lead in the first and added a six-run sixth inning en route to a 9-1 victory over the Jackson Generals Tuesday at Trustmark Park. The series finale and rubber match of the series is slated for 7:00 PM Wednesday.
Mississippi (6-6, 39-41) plated nine runs on 13 hits while Jackson (5-7, 34-46) scored one run on four hits. Emerson Landoni led the Braves offensively with a 3-for-4 night at the plate. He scored twice and drove in two runs.
The Generals took a 1-0 lead in the first. Tyler Smith doubled and DJ Peterson singled to start the inning. A Jordy Lara ground out then allowed Smith to score and give Jackson an early lead.
Mississippi responded in the bottom of the frame. Landoni doubled and took third when KD Kang reached on an error. Kevin Ahrens then delivered a sacrifice fly to center field, tying the game at 1-1. Rio Ruiz walked before Matt Kennelly’s RBI single to center put the M-Braves out front 2-1.
Sean Godfrey and Levi Hyams reached on back-to-back singles to start the fifth. A sacrifice bunt allowed both runners to advance before Godfrey came in to score on a wild pitch, extending the M-Braves lead to 3-1.
Landoni and Kang both singled in the sixth. Ahrens ripped a single to left field, driving home Landoni. Rio Ruiz and Matt Kennelly followed with RBI-singles to make it 6-1. Godfrey’s base hit loaded the bases for Braeden Schlehuber’s RBI-single. Landoni later delivered a two-run knock to extend the Braves lead to 9-1.
Victor Mateo (5-5) held the Generals to one earned run on three hits and three walks in six innings of work to pick up the win. Francisco Rondon and Ryne Harper worked the final three frames to finish the game.
Moises Hernandez (3-4) gave up eight runs, six earned, on 10 hits and a walk. He struck out two in five innings pitched.
In Wednesday’s series finale at Trustmark Park, the M-Braves send right-hander Steve Janas (0-0, 0.00) to the hill against Generals lefty Misael Siverio (4-7, 3.98). First pitch is slated for 7 p.m.. Gates open at 6 p.m.
