A community meeting seeking to inform senior citizens about the health care resources available to them will take place in Brookhaven Thursday.
The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. at Living World Faith Ministries on 791 Ozark Lane.
Lincoln County District 1 Supervisor Jerry Wilson and Brookhaven City Alderwoman Mary Wilson are hosting the event that will feature speakers from Southwest Mississippi Planning and Development District from Natchez.
“It’s about helping people,” Wilson said. “It’ll be a blessing for everyone to come out.”
Wilson said the visitors will talk about Social Security, disability, Medicaid, vouchers and waivers for Medicare.
“We just try to make people aware and let them know what’s available for them,” Wilson said.
He said he and Mary chose SWMPDD because of their support from the national organizations.
“They have so much to offer; there’s so much there that could be a help to everybody,” Wilson said.
SWMPDD provides multiple services including grant services, economic development services, small business assistance, technical assistance and housing assistance as well as providing an elderly and disabled Medicaid waiver program.
The waiver program is described as a long-term care program, which offers services in the home of clients as an alternative to institutional placement.
The SWMPDD’s agency on aging office focuses on finding new funding sources to develop more services for senior citizens in its area. The office recognizes that the population of citizens 65 and older is growing and more and more they are seeking to continue living independently as they age.
Wilson said people who attended the last community meeting with Faith and Hope Independent Living, LLC found the information interesting and have inquired further. He hopes that this meeting goes similarly and encourages everyone to attend.
