Area girls will be able to speak candidly with positive female role models at the Miss Mississippi 13 Going on 30 day camp this weekend.
The free event will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Brookhaven Recreational Center. Fifty-three girls are already registered through Eventbrite.com.
Britney Clark, speaker and mentor who grew up in Brookhaven, is one of 35 chosen ambassadors for the Miss Mississippi’s 13 Going on 30 platform. Ambassadors have a desire to lead and share the principles to enhance their communities. The platform’s purpose is to give girls ages 9 to 16 positive advice and support and to encourage them to embrace their age and not make adult decisions before their time. The platform also encourages choosing positive role models, goal-setting and harnessing high-self esteem.
Clark said the community joined forces with her to create something positive for local girls. This year’s sponsors include Janie’s Bakery, Bowie’s Barbeque, Wal-Mart Supercenter, Fox’s Pizza Den, Girl Scouts of Greater Mississippi, N2Books Scholarships Inc., Herbalife, Sister 2 Sister Jewelry, Thayer Church of Christ, Shell Gas Station, Kenny King Photography, District 39 Sen. Sally Doty and other community leaders who will be serving at the event.
The event will include a fitness component, food and words of encouragement from “Get on Up” actress LeCourtney Harness. Harness portrayed James Brown’s girlfriend, Marva Whitney, in the film adaptation of his life.
The girls will be divided into their respective age groups and teamed with a mentor to discuss confidence, dream building and how to achieve their goals. Clark chose mentors from the finance, healthcare, human relations, communications and entrepreneurial fields to give the girls assurance that whatever they desire to do, it is achievable.
