Edrick Alsworth has achieved another great accomplishment as he prepares to show off his basketball talents at the next level. Loyd Star’s power forward has signed a basketball scholarship with the Hinds Community College Bulldogs.

Alsworth signed his official scholarship papers Wednesday in the Loyd Star Gymnasium. He is the son of Anita and Eddie Alsworth.

“I’m excited to have the opportunity to play basketball at Hinds,” said Alsworth.

Alsworth said he wants to pursue a career in physical education to be a basketball coach.

As a senior, Alsworth averaged 19.2 points, eight rebounds and three assists per game. Loyd Star finished their 2014-15 season with a 20-7 record and won the Region 7-2A crown with an 9-1 record.

During his tenure at Loyd Star, Alsworth received numerous awards. He was chosen as the most dedicated, all-district, honorable mention for south state, the best of Mississippi by Max preps, most improved, all-Lincoln County, best free throw shooter and best offensive player in 2014.

In 2015, he received South State honors, All-District MVP, Lincoln County MVP Coaches Award, No. 1 Free Throw Shooter in the State of Mississippi, a trophy for the second best runner up in the Men Super Conference in Madison and also earned an invitation to go to play basketball for nine days in Australia.

Alsworth has also recently been selected, along with other classmates Abby Thomas in cross-country and Terril Lloyd in powerlifting, to represent Loyd Star at the Clarion-Ledger’s “the Best of Ms Preps” banquet on Thursday.

“It is a big honor to be chosen for this opportunity to be among the best in Mississippi out of 22 different sports,” said Alsworth.

Alsworth said he has been playing basketball since the fourth grade, starting with peewee.

“I have always been taught that if anybody can do it, I can do it as well,” said Alsworth. “My attitude determines my abilities and anything is possible.”

Alsworth shared his thoughts on his basketball coach Gene “Moochie” Britt.

“I appreciate everything that Coach Britt has done for me. His hard work and dedication to the team has helped me improved a lot over the years. He has been a true motivator to me.”

Britt expressed his thoughts on Alsworth.

“Edrick has played for me since the seventh grade,” said Britt. “He has a great attitude and loves the game.

“I am extremely proud for Edrick for receiving an opportunity to play ball on the college level,” added Britt. “He will definitely be a good player for Hinds. Edrick is a dedicated, hard worker, and I wish him the best as he pursue his goals in life.”
