A Brookhaven man accused of a 2013 murder pleaded guilty Tuesday to manslaughter and conspiracy to commit manslaughter.

David Earl Jones Jr., 421 N. Seventh St., entered his plea in Lincoln County Circuit Court for his part in the 2013 shooting death of Darion K. Reese.

Jones, 30, and Kevin Barome Collins, 47, turned themselves in on Oct. 14, 2013, for their involvement in a shooting the day before. The incident took place at the corner of North Monticello Street and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, and it resulted in the death of 24-year-old Darion K. Reese.

According to a report from October 2013, witnesses reported to Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell that all three men were shooting during the incident, which spawned from a verbal altercation. After the shooting Jones and Collins fled the scene, witnesses told police. Reese was transported to King’s Daughters Medical Center and pronounced dead there with one gunshot wound to the chest, according to Ricky Alford of the Lincoln County Coroner’s Office.

An additional injury resulted from the shooting. Kimberly Simon, 39, was shot in the left shoulder by a stray bullet when she stopped her car at the intersection. Simon was later released from the hospital the next day.

Jones was indicted, along with Collins, on April 3, 2014. Jones’s sentencing date is set for May 18. Collins, 1303 N. Center St., is set to submit a plea Wednesday.
