A one-vehicle accident on Interstate 55 in Lincoln County Tuesday night resulted in the death of a Smithdale man. 

The Mississippi Highway Patrol reported that Emmitt Jason Wallace, 41, of Smithdale, was traveling south on Interstate 55 in a 1998 Chevy Tahoe. Trooper Brandon Fortenberry said reports show the Tahoe went off the left shoulder of the road after the driver overcorrected causing the truck to flip several times into the median.

As the vehicle flipped, Wallace was ejected. The truck came to rest upside-down in the median. The call came into MHP at 9:13 p.m. Lincoln County Coroner Clay McMorris pronounced Wallace dead on scene at 9:35 p.m.

Fortenberry said the driver was not wearing a seatbelt, and the accident is under investigation.
