Lady Wolves close out season with two wins

WESSON – The Copiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves failed to qualify for the MACJC State Playoffs after losing 7-3 to Hinds in their first game on Wednesday in Wesson.
However the Lady Wolves salvaged the day by bouncing back to beat Hinds 8-0 in five innings. Co-Lin capped the day with an 8-6 win over Holmes after a ceremony that recognized their sophomore class.
Hinds 7, Co-Lin 3
Hinds pitcher Bridgett Goss kept Co-Lin off balance all day with a variety of off speed pitches. Goss gave up 17 hits, but limited Co-Lin to three earned runs and struck out three. Co-Lin left two stranded in the third inning, three stranded in the fourth inning, and two on in the sixth inning.
“We just couldn’t get the hits when we needed them,” said Lady Wolves head coach Allen Kent. “We left runners stranded every inning,” said Kent.
Hinds jumped out to a 2-0 lead after a Bree Glenn 2-run home run in the top of the first inning and never surrendered that lead. Starter Kamry Creel lasted three innings for Co-Lin and gave up three runs on seven hits. She was relieved by freshman Lauren Brashier who surrendered four runs on six hits. Freshman Lucy Lewis recorded the final two outs for Co-Lin in the seventh inning.
Trailing only 4-3 in the seventh inning, Co-Lin saw a fielding error cost them two runs and shift all the momentum to the Lady Eagles. Adrienne Wallace, Lauren Brashier, and Savannah Johnston all had three hits apiece for Co-Lin. Of their 17 hits, Co-Lin only had one extra base hit, a double by Brittany Barbay. Brooke Laigast had two RBIs for the Lady Wolves.
Co-Lin 8, Hinds 0
After a Veterans Recognition Ceremony that saw veterans from the Army, Navy, Marines, and Air Force throw out a ceremonial first pitch, the Lady Wolves used 13 hits to take care of Hinds in five innings.
Sam Lee and Savannah Johnston had two RBIs apiece for Co-Lin. Johnston, Julian Johnson, McKenzie Brock, and Kaitlyn Taylor had two hits apiece for Co-Lin.
Lucy Lewis gained the win after allowing only two hits in five innings.
Co-Lin 8, Holmes 6
Co-Lin and Holmes had originally been scheduled to play on Tuesday, but a conflict forced the teams to cut one game from their planned doubleheader and move the game to Wednesday. All total Co-Lin lost seven games from their schedule due to weather cancelations.
Holmes, the North No. 4 seed when the playoffs start this weekend, began the game with a 5-0 lead, but saw Co-Lin come back to tie the game at 5-5 after one complete inning. Trailing 6-5 in the sixth inning, Co-Lin used a three run rally to take the lead.
Sophomore Rheagan Welch picked up the win for Co-Lin after allowing six runs on eight hits. Co-Lin pounded out 14 hits. The Lady Wolves posted an whopping 44 hits in the triple header. Savannah Johnston, Brooke Laigast, Breanna McKenzie, Payton Sheffield, and Kamry Creel had two hits apiece for Co-Lin.
Co-Lin honored their sophomore class prior to the game with Holmes. Sophomores suiting up for the final time in a Co-Lin (18-19, 11-17 Division) uniform were Adrienne Wallace, Sam Lee, Kristen Byrd, Rheagan Welch, Savannah Johnston, Brooke Laigast, Breanna McKenzie, Kamry Creel, Payton Sheffield, Julian Johnson, and student assistant Braxton Foster.
