A suspect remains at large following a Friday armed robbery of a Brookhaven gas station. It was the second armed robbery reported in the county within a 24-hour period.

Brookhaven Police Chief Bobby Bell reported an armed robbery Friday night at a gas station located at 1410 Hwy. 51. The store is located at the intersection of 51 North and North Jackson Street.

A black man of slender build between 6 feet and 6 feet, 3 inches came into the store with a gun in a hoodie with his face wrapped up. Bell said he demanded money from the clerk, got the money and ran from the store toward North Jackson Street.

The owner of the store discharged a firearm but Bell doesn’t believe the suspect was hit after checking local hospitals for anyone showing up with gunshot wounds. Neither the clerk nor the owner were injured.

Earlier the same day, the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office handled an armed robbery case that took place around 5 a.m. at Auburn Grocery on Hwy. 98. Sheriff Steve Rushing said his office arrested Phillip McNulty, 31, in connection with the crime.

Rushing said McNulty approached the Auburn Grocery clerk as she was opening up for the morning. He forced her to go inside and took approximately $500 from the register.

Rushing said that McNulty had a crowbar with him and the clerk had a handgun with her. After a struggle he took the gun from her and left with it when he fled the scene. The clerk was not injured.

Rushing said McNulty was located in McComb with the help of the Southwest Mississippi Narcotics Enforcement Unit. The sheriff said they called friends and family members of McNulty and were able to make contact with him over the phone. That was when McNulty agreed to meet law enforcement and turn himself in.

McNulty is currently being held in the Lincoln County jail. He has also been connected to another armed robbery in Pike County that occurred Thursday morning.
